Conquering Armies is a landmark 1970s heroic fantasy comic book created by writer Jean-Pierre Dionnet and artist Jean-Claude Gal. It originally debuted in France in the seminal magazine Métal Hurlant before being translated into English and published in the United States by Heavy Metal Communications in 1977 and 1978.

Overview & Artistic Impact

  • Genre Pioneer: It helped define the modern "Heroic Fantasy" and grim sword-and-sorcery genres in European comics.
  • Visual Masterpiece: The book is renowned for Gal's incredibly intricate, highly detailed black-and-white line work. Many individual panels are detailed enough to resemble fine studio paintings.
  • Narrative Focus: Unlike traditional grand fantasy epics, Dionnet’s scripts subverted the genre by focusing on the "dead moments" of war—the exhausting, morally ambiguous, and bleak aftermaths of conquest rather than glorified battles
