The exhibition Heaven in a Carpet offers to the public a selection of around 60 knotted carpets, which were made between the 15th to the 17th centuries in workshops in the Muslim Orient - Mamluk Egypt, Ottoman Turkey and Safavid Persia. These carpets, certain of which are of spectacular dimensions, illustrate the three decorative fashions that appeared during this period. From the geometrical style of the 15th century, close to architectural decoration, there will follow at the beginning of the following century, constructions with a central medallion symbolically reproducing a Celestial throne, and then, complex arrangements with vegetable themes and fantastic flowers. Beside these works, which come directly from court artists, there are village and tribal carpets with related designs. Later, but no less beautiful, these carpets were woven in domestic workshops, in either the Caucasus, North Africa or Central Asia and demonstrate the creative work of memory. The exhibition, which is organized in partnership with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon has called upon around ten museum loans, in France as well as in foreign countries, and gathers pieces which have rarely been seen by the public.

De tentoonstelling 'Hemel in een Tapijt' biedt het publiek een selectie van ongeveer 60 geknoopte tapijten, vervaardigd tussen de 15e en de 17e eeuw in ateliers in het islamitische Oosten: het Egypte van de Mammelukken, het Ottomaanse Turkije en het Perzische Safavidisme. Deze tapijten, waarvan sommige een spectaculair formaat hebben, illustreren de drie decoratieve stijlen die in deze periode ontstonden. Van de geometrische stijl uit de 15e eeuw, die dicht bij de architectonische decoratie staat, volgen aan het begin van de volgende eeuw constructies met een centraal medaillon dat symbolisch een hemelse troon voorstelt, en vervolgens complexe arrangementen met plantaardige thema's en fantastische bloemen. Naast deze werken, die rechtstreeks van hofkunstenaars afkomstig zijn, zijn er dorps- en tribale tapijten met verwante ontwerpen. Later, maar daarom niet minder mooi, werden deze tapijten geweven in huiselijke ateliers in de Kaukasus, Noord-Afrika of Centraal-Azië en tonen ze het creatieve werk van het geheugen. De tentoonstelling, die in samenwerking met de Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lissabon wordt georganiseerd, heeft een tiental musea in Frankrijk en het buitenland uitgeleend en brengt stukken bijeen die zelden door het publiek zijn gezien.
