As a result of their actions such as the "Punk Prayer" in Moscow's Christ the Savior Cathedral and their subsequent trials, the girls of Pussy Riot were transformed into icons of protest. The images of the principal members, Nadezda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina, were seen all around the world before the two disappeared for two years into Russian prison camps. Immediately after their release, the successful Dutch entrepreneur and avid photographer Bert Verwelius contacted the two women, setting into motion what was to be an extraordinary photo shoot: using the activists' stories and sketches of the prison camp, he depicted their living and working conditions there as an impressive picture series. Yet Bert Verwelius also shows us a very different, hidden side to the two young women in this book, his first publication. With his sensitive portraits, he captures the open and loveable nature of Nadezda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alekhina-- not to mention their beauty.

 

Door hun acties, zoals het "Punkgebed" in de Christus-Verlosserkathedraal in Moskou en hun daaropvolgende processen, werden de meisjes van Pussy Riot getransformeerd tot iconen van protest. De foto's van de belangrijkste leden, Nadezda Tolokonnikova en Maria Alekhina, waren over de hele wereld te zien voordat de twee twee jaar lang verdwenen in Russische gevangenkampen. Direct na hun vrijlating nam de succesvolle Nederlandse ondernemer en fervent fotograaf Bert Verwelius contact op met de twee vrouwen, wat leidde tot een bijzondere fotoshoot: aan de hand van de verhalen en schetsen van de activisten in het gevangenkamp legde hij hun leef- en werkomstandigheden daar vast in een indrukwekkende fotoserie. Toch laat Bert Verwelius in dit boek, zijn eerste publicatie, ook een heel andere, verborgen kant van de twee jonge vrouwen zien. Met zijn gevoelige portretten legt hij de open en innemende aard van Nadezda Tolokonnikova en Maria Alekhina vast – om nog maar te zwijgen van hun schoonheid.
