Morphos the Shapechanger is the final work of legendary comic artist Burne Hogarth, best known for his classic 1930s and 40s Tarzan comic strips.

Publication and History

  • Original Publication: Published by Dark Horse Comics in July 1996.
  • Collaborators: Co-written by Hogarth and screenwriter Harry Hurwitz.
  • Format: Released as a deluxe, full-color prestige format comic/graphic novel.
  • The Final Work: It was intended as a four-issue miniseries, but Hogarth passed away shortly after completing the first issue. The published volume contains the complete first chapter, along with the scripts and preliminary sketches for the remaining unproduced issues.

Story and Art

  • Plot: The story blends Arthurian legend with 1990s science fiction. It follows two scientists on a quest for human evolution, guided by the spirit of Merlin the sorcerer, who seeks to change the nature of mankind after being trapped for centuries.
  • Art Style: The book features Hogarth's signature "Dynamic Anatomy" style—highly detailed, muscular, and expressive—applied to a modern fantasy/sci-fi setting.
