Make sure you head down to Pieter Henket’s exhibition at the Museum de Fundatie-Paleis a/dBlijmarkt before it draws to a close. Many people might know Henket from his photograph of Lady Gaga that was later used for the cover of her debut album, but he has also proven to be remarkably diverse in his repertoire. Often compared with Anton Corbijn, who was known for his portraits of U2 and other rock stars, Henket captures the capricious yet irresistably engrossing nature of celebrity culture through his work. Having had his work featured in magazines from Harper’s Bazaar to Vogue, Henket might be easily mistaken for a ‘celebrity photographer’ amongst the likes of Mario Testino, but this could not be further from the truth. 

His current exhibition flings the spotlight on one of his key areas of interest, which is in filmmaking. The series of works shown include ‘Interrogation Project’, in which he accused famous actors and actresses of crimes they had not committed, and then capturing their reactions to these accusations. Another excellent project that is currently showing at the museum is ‘The Wait’, a film that documents the interactions between top Dutch actors such as Halina Reijn and Arjan Ederveen, as they wait in a cold police cell for the return of their interrogators. Gently mocking in his tone, Henket successfully communicates the vulnerability and ultimate humanness of his subject matter, bringing them down from the pedestals of unrealistic expectations that they have been placed on.

Veel mensen kennen Henket misschien van zijn foto van Lady Gaga, die later werd gebruikt voor de cover van haar debuutalbum, maar hij heeft ook bewezen een opmerkelijk divers repertoire te hebben. Henket, die vaak wordt vergeleken met Anton Corbijn, die bekend stond om zijn portretten van U2 en andere rocksterren, legt in zijn werk de grillige maar onweerstaanbaar boeiende aard van de celebritycultuur vast. Zijn werk verscheen in tijdschriften van Harper's Bazaar tot Vogue, en Henket zou gemakkelijk kunnen worden aangezien voor een 'celebrityfotograaf' in de trant van Mario Testino, maar niets is minder waar.

Zijn huidige tentoonstelling belicht een van zijn belangrijkste interessegebieden: filmmaken. Tot de tentoongestelde werken behoort onder meer ‘Interrogation Project’, waarin hij beroemde acteurs en actrices beschuldigde van misdaden die ze niet hadden gepleegd en vervolgens hun reacties op deze beschuldigingen vastlegde. Een ander uitstekend project dat momenteel in het museum te zien is, is ‘The Wait’, een film die de interacties documenteert tussen Nederlandse topacteurs zoals Halina Reijn en Arjan Ederveen, terwijl ze in een koude politiecel wachten op de terugkeer van hun ondervragers. Met een licht spottende toon weet Henket de kwetsbaarheid en ultieme menselijkheid van zijn onderwerp succesvol over te brengen en hen van de voetstukken van onrealistische verwachtingen te halen waarop ze zijn geplaatst.
